Summary of discussions – SLaM service user and carer advisory group for emergency access and complex care services

Hello all,

The departments that manage the services at South London & Maudsely NHS Foundation Trust have ‘advisory groups’ where service users and carers come together to advise on and discuss developments.   The Psychological Medicine department advisory group produces a brief summary of their discussions.  The purpose  is to let interested people know what is being discussed.  Please circulate as appropriate.

The Psychological Medicine Clinical Academic Group (CAG) runs services across the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). The services include emergency access services (such as home treatment services, A&E psychiatric liaison), complex care services (such as eating disorders, chronic fatigue, mother & baby services) and neurosciences services (such as brain injury). Advisory group members have experience of services either as service users or family members/carers.  We work with the senior managers to keep the views of service users & carers at the heart of all service developments and improvements.  To make sure that people know what we are discussing in our meetings, we have developed this short briefing sheet:

  1. Six people with experience of using services or being a family member/carer were present at the November meeting.  Also present were the managers of the 3 Triage Wards, the Patient & Public Involvement Lead and the Croydon Clinical Service lead.  Apologies were received from 3 service user/ carer consultants and 1 staff member.
  2. As agreed at the last meeting, the focus of this meeting was patient experience on Triage wards. We focussed on the improvement work happening on triage wards following the recent visits by group members. Initial visits were held in the Spring and follow up visits in October. Discussions focussed on the following areas:

Care planning

Members of our group will continue to advise the wards on developing a user friendly template for a care plan for people on a triage wards.  We will make sure that black/black british people are involved in developing this because they are currently significantly less likely to say they are satisfied with care planning.  One ward manager has designed a poster about care planning and she will share this with the other managers.

Food/Refreshments

The quality and quantity of food available has been raised as an issue.  There is a time-limited trustwide working group working with the food providers to make improvements.  Ward managers will ensure that complaints continue to be logged and forwarded.  They will also ensure that there is easy access to water 24 hours a day.

Community meetings

Group members advised that community meetings should be run by service users, but that staff should be present.  Patients should be able to read the notes from the meetings which should be presented in a clear, but accessible style.    Advisory group members will assist ward staff to develop the community meetings when the work on care planning has been completed.

Information

The group acknowledged that a lot of discussions focussed on patient information.  It was agreed that a time limited working group should be set up to develop a consistent approach to: developing ward induction packs, care planning folders, notice boards and ensuring adequate availability of appropriate leaflets

Satisfaction Questionnaires

The ward managers agreed to display ‘Thank You and Feedback’ posters, showing how the service will use patient feedback for improvements.

This work will continue to be monitored through the Triage pathway meetings, the governance management meeting and the service user & carer advisory group.

The advisory group thanked the ward managers for attending and offered continued support to their work to improve patient experience.

Views and comments from SLaM service users and carers on any of the above issues, as well as feedback on how you would like the Psychological Medicine Service User & Carer Advisory Group to develop its strategic work with SLaM, are welcome.  Please contact Alice Glover, Patient & Public Involvement Lead on 0203 228 0959  or email alice.glover@slam.nhs.uk

Will you ask the NHS to value mental health?

We’re a member of the We Need To Talk coalition, a group of charities, professional organisations, Royal Colleges and service providers who believe in the effectiveness of psychological therapies.Today we published We still need to talk, a report which tells us that a third of people with the most severe mental illness are not offered talking therapy by the NHS. Yet evidence shows that when people do get help, it improves their health and helps make recovery possible – it can also help prevent people from developing psychosis in the first place.

Take action now – tell the NHS how important our mental health is

One in five people with severe mental illness are waiting more than a year to get psychological therapies. We would rightly never accept this state of affairs for people with physical health problems – it should be no different for people with mental illness.

We want the NHS to offer a full range of evidence-based psychological therapies to anyone who needs it within 28 days of anyone requesting a referral.

Our brilliant colleagues at Mind are putting pressure on MPs and Government Ministers. But David Nicholson, the Chief Executive of the NHS, also has a crucial role to play in making this happen. The NHS has already agreed to introduce waiting times but we’re really worried it isn’t happening quickly enough. If we collectively act we have a much greater chance of making this change happen.

Will you ask David Nicholson to lead the way so that people with severe mental illness have access to the help they need, when they need it? By taking this action you are making it clear that our mental health is important to the NHS.

Thank you so much for your support.

Best wishes,

Charlotte Wetton, Senior Campaigns Officer.

Lewisham Mental Health and Wellbeing Day – 19th November 2013

Lewisham Mental Health and Wellbeing Day

Tuesday 19th November 2013 at the Civic Suite, Catford

This event was hosted by The Lewisham Mental Health Partnership Board (which includes NHS Lewisham CCG, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Lewisham Adult Services and London Borough of Lewisham).

The Mental Health & Wellbeing Stakeholder Event provided an opportunity for all ‘stakeholders’ i.e. people with an interest in mental health, to come together and discuss mental health service provision in Lewisham. Whether they were interested in finding out more about mental health, wanted to get involved in discussions about community mental health teams, or just to pop in to pick up a leaflet or even stay for the whole event.

Matthew has done great blogs of this event – an audio blog, a slideshow blog as well as taking photos.

Opportunity to join a new Social Enterprise

We are always looking to welcome new people to join our team.

If you have lived experience of mental ill-health or of caring for someone who does, you would be very welcome to apply to work with us, either on projects or in our office.

We are looking for people to undertake a wide range of project work.

You should have a good level of understanding and some experience of working in one or more of the following areas:

  • Working with vulnerable adults
  • Training
  • Delivering presentations / public speaking
  • Project management

For most of our project work we provide training; usually a combination of classroom and experiential training.

To undertake any client work, you must also be able to provide a CRB or DBS which is less than 5 years old. Having something recorded will not usually prevent you from working with us.

For our office work, we are looking for people with experience in one of more of the following areas:

  • General admin
  • Office management / PA
  • Book-keeping
  • IT (software and / or hardware)
  • Windows: Word / Excel / PowerPoint

We are happy to provide training in some areas if you already have skills and experience in one or more of the above.

Our office is based in a quiet street in London SE17.

We also actively welcome people without lived experience to join our office team as volunteers.

Although EbyE (Consultants and office workers) is fairly well balanced in terms of gender, and has diversity in terms of ethnicity, we actively welcome people from BME backgrounds, as we would like our workforce to be made up of people from a wider range of BME backgrounds.

All of our workers are required to register with HMRC as self-employed, and to make an annual on-line return. This is a simple process, and we have an office worker who can help you (on a paid basis) should you wish. He can also give you general advice for free.

Consultation on the future of Day Services in Southwark: overview findings

Dear all,

Experts by Experience was asked to make a presentation today on the findings from the Consultation. I attach below a link to a PDF and word version of the presentation.

http://expertsbyexperience.wordpress.com/2013/11/22/consultation-on-the-future-of-day-services-in-southwark-overview-findings/

Please also note the revised publication date within this document, which is due to the Council asking us to include the written responses in our analysis and Report.

Become a community researcher

Volunteers are needed to help evaluate the Southwark and Lambeth Integrated Care project, which focuses on coordinating people’s care across physical, mental and  social care needs so that they have a better experience of care, and are better supported to keep healthy and maintain their independence. The project is a partnership involving the NHS, the local councils and other agencies.
As part of the project evaluation, people who have been treated through the programme will be interviewed to find out their views and experiences of the approach.
Volunteer interviewers
The research team from Birmingham University carrying out the evaluation is looking for volunteers to help conduct the interviews.  The opportunity is open to people who have experience of using health and social care services in Lambeth or Southwark and are either:
  • aged over 60
  • living with a long-term health condition.

If you don’t qualify for this particular opportunity, why not consider becoming a Healthwatch Lambeth Ambassador.

The co-researcher role
As well as carrying out interviews jointly with the researchers, the trained volunteers, known as co-researchers, will also help to work out what questions will be asked in the interviews, and to make sense of the findings.
Co-reasearchers are required to take part in a three day training programme, which is unpaid. However, they will be paid £10 per hour for the time spent interviewing and all travel costs will be paid too. Co-researchers would be expected to carry out four interviews each, lasting two hours each. Training is likely to start in January 2014 and will take place in Southwark or Lambeth.
As well as carrying out interviews, there will be further opportunities for co-researchers to contribute to the project if they wish to do so. This might include, for example, commenting on the research findings and working with the research team to produce a final report. These contributions will not be paid.
Find out more
Download the role description and the application form.  As there are only six places available, you are encouraged to submit your application as soon as possible.
You may also be interested in becoming a Healthwatch Lambeth Ambassador.

People With Mental Health Issues MORE Likely to Win An ESA Benefit Appeal:

We told you a few days ago that we were carrying out an investigation into whether those with mental health issues were less likely to win an ESA appeal than people appealing a decision solely on the grounds of having a physical disability.

We are somewhat surprised to find out that the former were more likely to win than the later – 41% compared to 38%.

These figures were obtained by the mental health charity MIND and forwarded to the Welfare News Service.
