The Dragon Café is taking a Break in August

A reminder in case you haven’t heard that The Dragon Café will be closed for the month of August, returning refreshed in September. We are all very conscious of the need for rest and attending to our wellbeing, and so at the mid-point of our second year there will be a break.

We wish you all a positive month and look forward to greeting you back on Monday 1st September when the adventure continues! Meanwhile you can check out a lovely selection of Photos from Monday’s Summer Celebration at http://dragoncafe.co.uk/news/#1 and while you’re there see photos from every Dragon Café so far.

PLUS take a look at this 3 minute Video Blog about the Café by Louise and Katie, filming for homeless support group SHP – the charity for homeless and vulnerable people in London http://unheardholler.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/experiences-of-dragon-cafe.html

MHFA Art Show

Hi there!

We are really excited to let you know that going forward we would really like to hold a mental health themed art event early next year. As it’s early days, we are still working out the logistics of how to run the event and the finer details are still to be combed through.

We still need your help!

MHFA would love to showcase art that was created by people with lived experience of mental health issues. The way that we are intending to use the art is to challenge people’s perceptions of mental health, open up conversations around mental health more easily using artwork as a focus point and provide a really interactive session where people can explore mental health through a different, and very creative, medium.

If you, or you know of somebody, who would be happy for their artwork to be used at an event then we would really appreciate if you could please send a photograph of the pieces you would like to be considered. At this stage, I would suggest only to submit work that you would be happy to have you as the named artist. Also, if you could include a brief explanation/interpretation then this will help when it comes to the selection process. Submission of artwork photographs would be on a purely voluntary basis.

Please note that we may not be able to use all artwork at events but we will incorporate as much as we can.

Our next working group meeting is on 21st August so we would love to be able to show some examples at this meeting.

I’m really looking forward to hearing from you and seeing some great artwork!

Best wishes,

Emma Gunn

Raw Sounds summer event

Join Raw Material as we celebrate the end of another term of Raw Sounds, our music and media programme for people with mental health needs, and see the positive impact music has on wellbeing. We also invite local mental health professionals and community organisations to visit our music and education facilities, and hear about our work.

Raw Sounds contributes to the wellbeing of the community by providing opportunities for young people experiencing mental health issues to express their creativity. Making music improves wellbeing through developing confidence, being creative and connecting with other people.

If you work with someone with mental health needs and would like to refer them to our programme, please contact us. Our next term begins on September 25th.

Music for the Mind and Mood
Our exploration of sound, music and movement continues. Join us to revive our Café Dancing Dragon in Art-Works at 2 pm, in preparation for festivities on the final Monday of this month – and also our last before a break in August. We will return on Monday 1st September refreshed and re-invigorated!  In the evening there will be a very special performance of live music, readings and strings (viols) in Melancholical Musings – a musical discourse in Melancholy at 7 pm.

B-scene at 11.30am on Sunday 27th July at St Mary’s, Lewisham

Sunday 27th July at 11.30am St Mary the Virgin Church, Lewisham High Street (next door to the Ladywell Psychiatric Unit and Lewisham hospital) will be hosting The B-scene Theatre Company.

The innovative B-Scene Theatre Company is a collaboration between Blue Elephant Theatre’s Participation Department and Crossways Mental Health Centre. The group itself is a diverse and dynamic mixture of people who have become a well bonded company who each bring their own experiences and skills to the work.

The project, which is led by people with mental health issues, works to establish meaningful and open conversations with others in the local area. The aim is to bring people who don’t have experience of mental health issues into social contact with those who do. Evidence suggests that this is one of the most effective ways of breaking down barriers of stigma and discrimination. B-Scene was established during the summer of 2012 with funding from Time To Change – England’s mental health anti-stigma programme run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

In the play we meet Sam and Lisa, two colleagues who work in the finance department of a printing company. As life’s pressures begin to build for Sam and he finds it more and more difficult to cope, we witness how his friend and colleague Lisa struggles to support him. This is a play with a twist however, as audience members are invited to think about, discuss and even change Lisa’s actions with the hope of changing the outcome.

Contact Fr David Evans (curate@lewishamparish.com) at St Mary’s or Carmine De Rosa (carmine.derosa@slam.nhs.uk) for further information.

SEE YOU THERE!

CoolTan Arts Largactyl Midnight Shuffle – 21st June 2014

On Saturday June 21st 2014, 11.45pm to 5am, Sunday June 22nd 2014 Matthew Mckenzie joined CoolTan Arts on a fun, guided midnight walk through South London.

This is his great video blog of the event talking about the walk, the talks along the way, games on ‘mad’ buildings, nightworking, surrealism and the anxious city.

Matthew also took lots of great pictures – you can see them on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.747738728602229.1073741892.476820022360769&type=3

Thank you Matthew!
