This event is the culmination of two collaborative artists’ residencies commissioned by Anxiety 2014 and will take the form of artists’ presentations and screenings.

Artists Christina Kral and ‘Patient X’ present their collaborative work exploring the idea of personal sanctuaries and acts of self-care within the everyday. Their modular cardboard spaces look at the concept and practice of dwelling. These participatory structures are the result of a three month-long exchange of ideas and working methods between the two artists. By continuously transforming the material, the artists negotiate their environments and create temporal spaces of self-expression.

The residency is co-hosted by Gasworks and Bethlem Gallery and funded by the Maudsley Charity.

Albert Potrony’s The Potential Space has been developed after a long period of engagement with the daily activities of the Friends of Cathja barge in Isleworth. The film focuses on the relationships between the people working in this unorthodox space, the work they produce and the setting they are in. By observing the parallels between making utilitarian objects and artistic practice and by documenting some of the rhythms, routines and processes that take place on the barge, The Potential Space reflects on what can happen when we engage in the process of making in the company of others.

Albert Potrony’s The Potential Space is comissioned by Anxiety 2014 & Friends of Cathja and Funded by Time to Change & the Mental Health Foundation

This event is part of Anxiety Arts Festival 2014

Curdled by Liz Atkin

Solo exhibition commissioned for Anxiety 2014 Arts Festival

‘Curdled’ is Liz Atkin’s personal exploration of the physical manifestations of anxiety, with a particular focus on the skin as a primary source for corporeal art. Through intimate photography, performance and installation, Atkin’s newly commissioned works investigate the possibilities of marking, extending and transforming the skin. Compulsive Skin Picking, a condition related to anxiety disorders, dominated her body for more than 20 years and her practice aspires to de-stigmatise the illness, raise awareness and advocate recovery.

Free Exhibition : May 23rd – 3rd July from 9-6pm Monday – Friday

Let me know if you’re signing up and I’ll make a point of finding you and catching up!

Also, don’t forget that London Champions now have our own Facebook group!   It’s a closed group so you would need to contact our administrator first, so if you use Facebook and would like to join us then please search for Robert Peacock and send him a friend request, then he can add you to the group.

Lewisham-on-Sea 26 October 2013

Do you live in or near to Lewisham in South East London? Would you be willing to talk about your personal experiences of mental health problems to help break down stigma?

Time to Change Needs You!

The Time to Change Village; ‘Lewisham-on-Sea’ will ‘pop-up’ at Lewisham Shopping Centre in Autumn. A new date has been confimed for Saturday 26 October and we’re looking for 60 volunteers from London to join our team.

The Time to Change Village  is an interactive space, where the public can have open conversations about mental health, whilst engaging in a range of activities and having lots of fun.

What you can expect?

When you volunteer at a Time to Change Village, our Volunteer Co-ordinators will be there to support you on the day.

You will get the chance to attend a training session before the event, to help you speak confidently to people visiting our seaside themed village in Lewisham Shopping Centre and have lots of fun!

Please indicate on the online registration form below if you would like to be offered a place on a training session.

We can reimburse your travel expenses of up to £15 for attending your training session and up to £15 travel expenses for attending the event.  Please keep receipts or your proof of purchase.

If this is your first experience of volunteering at a Time to Change event, at the training session you will also find out how to become a Time to Change Champion too.

Sign up to become a Volunteer

Times to Change Volunteers are people with lived experience of mental health problems who support our community engagement events to end mental health discrimination by talking to people in their communities.

Rafiki Project

Rafiki Project Information Sheet – Final

Rafiki Promotional Poster

Who we are?

The Rafiki project is an exciting new project developed to start conversations with African Communities in South London about Mental Health.  Africa Advocacy Foundation delivers the project in partnership with Community Therapies and Training Service. The Rafiki project is funded by Time to Change, England’s biggest programme to end the stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental health problems. The programme is run by the charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, and funded by the Department of Health and Comic Relief.

What does Rafiki mean?

Rafiki means ‘Friend’ in Swahili. We believe that by starting conversations, sharing stories and experiences around mental health we can create new friendships to challenge stigma and discrimination.

What we are doing?

Rafiki project will bring together people with personal experience of mental health problems and those without experience of mental health problems from African communities to challenge stigma and discrimination. We are recruiting 50 people to train up as community champions to volunteer within African Communities. We are looking for people with lived experience of mental health problems and/or an interest in mental health to train.

Why are we doing it?

We know stigma and discrimination impacts all people but we know within African communities the issues around culture and mental health impact us in a different way. It means that more people from African communities are likely to end up in hospital and less likely to talk about their problems with family and friends. We also know that sometimes when people talk about the problems they have, they may experience discrimination. We think that by getting support earlier can not only prevent mental ill health from developing but, also support people with mental ill health through recovery. We want to challenge the stigma that stops us sharing and believe that by sharing experiences both good and bad can help challenge stigma and discrimination around mental health!

How will we do it?

We are looking for a range of people from all backgrounds to play a role in the project. The project is aimed at starting conversations with African Communities so we welcome speakers of other languages. As a Champion you will be expected to attend training over 6 weeks and then commit to a minimum of 30 hours over 6 months which works out at about 5 hours per month and this includes support sessions. If you are not able to make sessions we are happy to be flexible with this and if you would like to become more involved we would welcome this as well.

The champions will then lead and develop community engagement and mental health awareness activities these will include art, poetry & music events and community outreach activities and make links with faith and spiritual groups. The aim is for groups to carry out different activities to engage people from African communities in conversation about mental health.

A weekly peer-support group will provide a space for the Community Champions to share experiences and support each other.

Where next?

If you are interested in registering for the programme we would love to hear from you! If English is your second language let us know and we can arrange for someone to translate!
