Local News

Local news from across the community

NHS England announces hiatus over fears patients are in the dark

Top clinical bodies have blasted the plans to share medical records (via their Care.Data Programme). NHS says it wants to improve ‘understanding’ of the scheme.
Controversial plans to share medical records will be delayed until later this year ‘to allow more time to build understanding of the benefits of using the information’, health officials have said.
Pressure has been mounting on NHS England, the body behind the scheme, after doctors leaders said patients need to know how their data will be used outside the NHS. Read more.

NHS Care.Data programme – Healthwatch’s response
You may have seen headlines BBC online  Daily Mirror last week stating that NHS England have agreed to delay the roll out of care.data until  the Autumn instead of April 2014. This follows on from local concerns raised through local Healthwatchs to Healthwatch England, with Healthwatch England writing a letter to Sir David Nicholson, Chief Exec of NHS England, and media pressure from us and other orgs over the last fortnight calling for the delay.

Thank you to all who raised your concerns about this programme with us. Without this evidence we/Healthwatch England wouldn’t have been able to exercise our statutory powers and force the NHS to listen to what patients and the public had to say.

Summary:
From April 2014, NHS England were due to roll out their data collection programme called care.data. It aimed to compile a central anonymised database by taking records from GP Practices and linking them with hospital records. Currently, information has been available from hospitals, but not what happens in GP surgeries. By collecting and linking this information, it would help to assess disease, examine new drugs  and other performance monitoring areas.

Improving health services in Dulwich and the surrounding areas – update!

The health centre will be a base for the provision of a wide range of health services in the community, especially for people with long term conditions. To be added to the stakeholder database contact SOUCCG.southwark-ccg@nhs.net. Read more.

The best possible health outcomes for Southwark people

Upcoming events for patients in Southwark

Dear All,

I hope this finds you well. I wanted to make you aware or remind you of a number of engagement activities NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group is holding in the next few weeks.

1.       Patient Leadership Training

Information about our Patient Leadership Training session that will be taking place on 19 February 2014 is attached to this email.

This session has been developed from comments and suggestions from patients who are involved with the Engagement and Patient Experience Committee as well as the Locality Patient Participation Groups in Southwark. This session will provide you with a clear understanding of background and contextual information about the national NHS landscape as it is now. There will also be specific focus on what NHS Southwark CCG is responsible for and the role that patients and the patient voice has in the work of the CCG and local services.

If you are interested in attending you can book a place directly or by contacting the CCG by email. We would be grateful if you could also promote this to colleagues within your groups and networks to encourage as many people as possible to attend and benefit.

NHS Southwark CCG is also planning future sessions which will be focussing on enabling people to develop specific skills involved in the effective running and conduct of patient participation groups and meetings.

2.       Improving Access to Primary Care

There will also be an engagement event, on 26 February 2014, looking at the proposals for future plans to improve access to primary care services. This event will be building on what local people have previously told us through engagement events last year which have all contributed to the development of the proposals for local services. You can book a space for this event directly or by contacting the CCG.

And lastly,

3.       What Goals and Outcomes are important to you and your family from Health and Care services?

There are still a few spaces available for this event, on Tuesday 28 January 2014. The event will be looking at shaping services across Southwark and Lambeth around what is most important for patients and their families. Your comments and contributions are needed to help make this happen. You can book a space directly or by contacting the CCG.
