Get involved in CoolTan’s new Van Gogh Walks!

Join our exciting new project – Van Gogh Walks
A CoolTan and Artangel Collaboration

Help plan and lead guided public walks inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and his time in London!

Workshops are facilitated by ARTIST R.M. Sánchez-Camus

February – Late April 2014 – Join at any point!

Every Wednesday 11am – 2pm at CoolTan Arts, Third Floor, 224-236 Walworth Road, SE17 1JE.

Workshops are free and are open to people 18+ with experience of mental distress (self defined).

In the workshops we will explore letters written by Van Gogh about his experience here in London and also consider what it would have been like to see this city through his eyes, allegedly suffering from epilepsy, bi-polar disorder and delusions.

We will work together on the walk narrative through interactive workshops that explore our own stories in connection to Van Gogh’s.
These walks will use as a source of inspiration the Victorian row house situated at 87 Hackford Road where Vincent Van Gogh resided in 1873 whilst in London.

We will explore walking around the area, passing Van Gogh’s former residence and invite people on to a new journey of discovery. This will be a one-to-one performance, in which one audience members walks on a narrated journey, which they can hear over headphones.

Food for Mood – A CoolTan Arts Cookbook

Book Launch 13th November 2013 with special guest Rosemary Shrager

Join CoolTan Arts on the 13th November 2013 from 6pm to 8pm for the launch of a uniquely creative cookbook, which will inspire you to cook and eat well whatever your mood!

Launch venue: CoolTan Arts, Third Floor, 224-236 Walworth Road, SE17 1JE.

Researched, written and designed by CoolTan Arts’ participants, Food for Mood serves up recipes and stories that reflect heritages from all over the globe; from warming Eritrean stew to nourishing Turkish salad, from spicy pepe soup to fajitas, moussaka and real Moroccan couscous. There are raw juices, sweet treats, foods for a picnic and easy one-pot recipes.

The book explores the important link between food and mood and has beautifully illustrated recipes for some of our favourite culinary creations. Whether you’re after a complex meal or a simple snack, food is a way to take care of ourselves and others, to express ourselves imaginatively, and to evoke old memories or cook up new ones.

We will be joined at the launch by a very special guest, celebrity chef and CoolTan patron, Rosemary Shrager, who will be on hand to sign copies of the cookbook.

Rosemary Shrager said in her introduction to the book: – ‘I am so delighted to have been asked to introduce the CoolTan Arts cookbook, and to be involved with this small inspirational charity which is achieving such marvellous results in its community.  It is wonderful that people have a chance to expand and strengthen themselves, their dreams and their identities, through this vital access to creativity’

The launch will be a fun sociable event with the chance to sample some of the recipes, which will be prepared by our very own Cooking Club – a CoolTan workshop which gives participants the opportunity to cook healthier, cheaper versions of their favourite meals and to explore which ingredients could benefit mental and physical health.

The book is priced at £9.99 and is now available to order from CoolTan Arts website: http://www.cooltanarts.org.uk/2013/10/gift-ideas-from-cooltan-arts/

Creativity linked to mental health

[PRESS RELEASE, 18 May 2010] New research shows a possible explanation for the link between mental health and creativity. By studying receptors in the brain, researchers at Karolinska Institutet have managed to show that the dopamine system in healthy, highly creative people is similar in some respects to that seen in people with schizophrenia.

High creative skills have been shown to be somewhat more common in people who have mental illness in the family. Creativity is also linked to a slightly higher risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Certain psychological traits, such as the ability to make unusual pr bizarre associations are also shared by schizophrenics and healthy, highly creative people. And now the correlation between creativity and mental health has scientific backing.

“We have studied the brain and the dopamine D2 receptors, and have shown that the dopamine system of healthy, highly creative people is similar to that found in people with schizophrenia,” says associate professor Fredrik Ullén from Karolinska Institutet’s Department of Woman and Child Health.

Just which brain mechanisms are responsible for this correlation is still something of a mystery, but Dr Ullén conjectures that the function of systems in the brain that use dopamine is significant; for example, studies have shown that dopamine receptor genes are linked to ability for divergent thought. Dr Ullén’s study measured the creativity of healthy individuals using divergent psychological tests, in which the task was to find many different solutions to a problem.

“The study shows that highly creative people who did well on the divergent tests had a lower density of D2 receptors in the thalamus than less creative people,” says Dr Ullén. “Schizophrenics are also known to have low D2 density in this part of the brain, suggesting a cause of the link between mental illness and creativity.”

The thalamus serves as a kind of relay centre, filtering information before it reaches areas of the cortex, which is responsible, amongst other things, for cognition and reasoning.

“Fewer D2 receptors in the thalamus probably means a lower degree of signal filtering, and thus a higher flow of information from the thalamus,” says Dr Ullén, and explains that this could a possible mechanism behind the ability of healthy highly creative people to see numerous uncommon connections in a problem-solving situation and the bizarre associations found in the mentally ill.

“Thinking outside the box might be facilitated by having a somewhat less intact box,” says Dr Ullén about his new findings.

My letter to depression

Dear Depression,

I wanted to write a letter to you in the hope we can come to some sort of agreement as to where we both go from here. I have written to you many times before in days of despair and days of hope, today is one of my good days when I can find the strength from within to speak to you forcefully, concisely, from the head and from the heart. If need be, I can also speak to you aggressively, just to enforce my point, but seeing as we are now old friends, I shall try to remain diplomatic at all times.

Let me start by complimenting you on the wonderful public relations team you have working for you. How you manage to cause so much pain and heartache to so many people and not get a negative reaction in the press is a testament to the work they do on your behalf. How you get away with creating a stigma against those of us who suffer is nothing short of remarkable. When we are on better terms, perhaps you can tell me how they do it?

Exactly how is it that you manage to turn the tables on people so that they are seen as weak, hopeless, worthless and even on the verge of taking their lives because you won’t let them breathe? How come you’re still not seen as the major illness you are when so many people suffer because of you?

I saw first hand how you destroyed someone with no regard, no remorse, just a relentless charge through someone’s persona. Watching someone so vibrant, loving, outgoing and confident become a shadow of the person that I loved was horrible. To make someone change in such a way and, worse of all, to do it over a long period of time so that they are not aware of it, how do you do that?

You came to me over a 2 to 3 year time span, I knew you were there but I was not ready to acknowledge your existence. Unaware of the strength I needed to halt you on your path of destruction, I allowed you to control me and my feelings until that day when you almost beat me.

The truth of the matter is that I was a beaten man, but I did not want you to claim me as another victim. From within, I found hidden strength, through the love of my wife and children, I fought back. I am lucky in that sense, but others are not as fortunate as me, it’s so hard with your uncanny knack of pinpointing someone’s weakness and going straight for it.

The good news for me, and the bad for you, is that now I’m on top. Without you I would not be writing, something I had a passion for as a young boy in school, YOU stirred my creative juices and made my mind awash with ways I could defeat you. Now I am ready to help others defeat you and most of all I am ready to show others how the weakness comes from you not themselves.

I am starting a revolution and will unite all “Depressionistas” from all walks of life in my battle. Are you ready for us this time my friend? We may seem weak as single entities but as a force we are strong and we will not be defeated. Your days of chaining us to shackles will soon be over.

Try putting a positive spin on that!
