Hello Healthwatch Supporter! As always we have been busy talking with local residents and have attended some interesting events in the recent weeks.
We delivered our first joint event with Healthwatch Lambeth as part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ Patient and Public Engagement strategy and attended the Clinical Commissioning Group’s ‘Talking about Talking Therapy’ looking at improving access to services in Southwark. Both events were well attended, you will hear more from us about the outcomes and we look forward to informing you of other opportunities to have your say. Enjoy this edition of our newsletter as well as some of the welcomed sunshine we are having! Best wishes, Alvin, Sec-Chan, Chip & Jo
Representation UpdateAlvin: Representation update As usual, my role in representing Healthwatch Southwark at a variety of boards and meetings has been very busy over the last few weeks. Time has flown since writing my last report which you can find here here. I am very pleased that we have two new active representatives David Cooper and Chipo Maendesa who have undertaken their induction as volunteers, both are Southwark residents. From Feb David has been attending the NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group Primary and Community Care Strategy Steering Group and Chipo attends the South London Public Health Collaborative Community Involvement Steering Group. During March & April so far I have attended several meetings which are listed below. This gives a snapshot but please contact me if you’d like to know more. Visit to King’s College Hospital Accident and Emergency Department- NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) as part of their commitment to improving the quality of services invited Healthwatch to contribute to the preparation and attend the visit on 7th March. This gave me an opportunity to ask about the provision for people with Mental Health care needs as several of our Supporters had raised their concerns about the issue. Visit to Marjorie Warren ward at King’s College Hospital organised by the CCG- our volunteer David Cooper went with CCG staff and Lay member Richard Gibbs to visit on 25th March. This is a ward for frail older people including those with dementia and delirium. CCG Integrated Governance and Performance Committee on 27 March, the committee took a deep look into the performance and other issues within the 3 NHS Trusts in our boroughs. Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust Patient and Public Engagement- Healthwatch Lambeth and Southwark organised a joint meeting last night for local people to contribute to the development of their Patient and Public Engagement Strategy. During this month I will be meeting with Charmaine Binns from Mencap Lambeth who also supports people with learning disabilities in Southwark and Natasha Beckett who is the manager at Voiceability responsible for managing the NHS Complaints Advocacy service in Southwark as well as other boroughs. If you would like to meet and talk about your community’s health and social care needs and experience get in touch. Till the next time! Future courses Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group achievements over the last year – by Dr Amr Zeineldine “Since I started this job I have seen many improvements in the way the NHS works. As we approach our first birthday, I wanted to share some of our key achievements over the past year. We’ve been busy looking at how we can make health services in Southwark better. We’ve been redesigning primary and community services – these are the services you receive outside major hospitals like King’s and St Thomas”. “Primary care’ is the advice and treatment you receive from your local GP, practice nurse, pharmacist or dentist. We call the health services you receive close to your home or in your home ‘community care’…” Read the rest. Consultation on changes to specialised services specifications All 14 service specifications have already been subject to consultation, however, we are now consulting on changes made to those documents. All amendments made are clearly marked on the individual documents and have already been tested with stakeholders who felt the changes to the documents proposed were significant enough to warrant further consultation.
